I talk to a lot of people who do not understand how websites make money. They can understand some websites that actually sell products or charge a membership fee, but do not understand how free websites generate income at all. This is done, most of the time, with affiliate marketing. This forum post – affiliate marketing from web browser to income – does a good job of explaining the basics.

A company wants to market a product or service so they set up an affiliate program which rewards other internet publishers for sending them visitors.

The publishers (i.e. website owners or bloggers) get paid if the visitor performs an action. This action could be a simple visit (pay per click), fills out a lead form (pay per lead), buys something (pay per sale), or even simply views the advertisement (pay per impression). The actual action will be clearly defined in the program.

the company sponsor will give the publisher a unique code to use on their website which will be able to track visitors so the website owner will get credit for that paid action.

Affiliate Program Examples

For example, Amazon has an affiliate program. I may have a website about books I like. If I also have the right code on my website, and a visitor to my website decides to follow that link to purchase the book from Amazon, I will earn a set percentage of the sale. That is a very common pay per sale affiliae program.

Another example would be a credit card company who wants more customers. Let’s say my website is about personal finance, and I post an advertisement on the benefits of this credit card. If one of my readers follows that link and applies for the credit card, plus is accepted, I may be paid on a set payout per accepted lead. That would be more of a pay per lead program because the customer did not actually buy anything yet.

Can Anybody Become an Affiliate?

Some affiliate programs have strict requirements, but many just want to make sure that their affiliates will follow the law. So yes, anybody with a websites, and some without, can start affiliate marketing. The keys to success are having a way to attract interested visitors that may perform the actions you can get paid on!
